I am giving up salmon as well.
From the page: "Not any more. Wild Atlantic salmon are commercially extinct, and runs of Pacific salmon south of the Alaska panhandle are experiencing catastrophic collapses. This year, for the sake of the remaining wild salmon on the West Coast, as well as my own health, I'm changing my diet. Whether it's wild or farmed, I'm swearing off salmon."

This is clearly not an isolated case. As long as consumers don't know the truth and care only about getting the cheapest meat, it will happen again and again.
From the page: "Michael Pollan doesn't blame workers at the Hallmark/Westland Meat Packing Company for the conditions that led to the nation's largest beef recall in history this past weekend. Instead, the author of "The Omnivore's Dilemma: Searching for the Perfect Meal in a Fast-Food World" aims his criticism at the mass-production system of slaughter, which produces mistakes along with millions of pounds of beef."

Pretty staggering stats. From the page: "The fact that orange juice is so prevalent on America's breakfast tables is something of a modern marvel. Virtually all of the OJ consumed in the United States contains oranges produced in Florida and Brazil; these two industry players produce half of the world's oranges, and 95 percent of that fruit ends up as juice. Environmentalists have long decried the recent proliferation of orange groves in Brazil, citing the crop's insatiable thirst (up to 129,000 cubic feet of water per acre annually) and the heavy use of pesticides (though juice oranges require less spraying than those intended for direct consumption)."

From the page: "Wansink is working to change the waistline of a nation. Americans are heavier than most other nationalitiesâ€"because our way of life bombards us with cues to eat more and more. â€oeIf you take the typical French person and put him in an American environment, he'll fall victim to the same cues that influence all of us,” he says. â€oeWe've got huge pantries and huge refrigerators inside huge kitchens inside huge houses,” Wansink said. â€oeWe can store a month's worth of potato chips and ice cream and still have room to spare.” Fittingly, cities with the highest premium on spaceâ€"New York, for exampleâ€"also show off the healthiest midsections."
